Being a natural on a budget

Hello friends, i hope you’re having a great week!

I’ve had so many people tell me that the reason why they haven’t returned to their natural hair is because the products are too expensive. But today i will share with you some affordable under £10 / $10 / NGN 5000 products that i and my mother use on our natural hair.

To get the most out of a product, always follow the instructions written on it.

Before you head out to buy hair products, always do your research.

Shampoo.

If you need products to get rid of that build up off your hair and scalp, then is for you. A little goes a long way with these, and they lather quickly.

  1. Garnier ultimate blends shampoo; the nourishing repairer: this is perfect for my hair during the very hot weather.
  2. Amla legend rejuvenating ritual moisture remedy shampoo.
  3. ORS olive oil creamy aloe shampoo.

Conditioner.

These are great conditioners that provide slip and smell great.

  1. ORS olive oil replenishing conditioner: if you need a product to help you comb your type 4 hair with a fine tooth comb then this is it.
  2. Amla legend rejuvenating ritual body filler hair cream conditioner.
  3. Garnier ultimate blends conditioner; the nourishing repairer: this goes perfectly with its shampoo.
  4. Cantu Shea butter moisturising rinse out conditioner.
  5. Profectiv mega growth detangling conditioner: i used this when i was transitioning and it really helped. Plus its shampoo is very tingly on the scalp.

Deep conditioner.

These are the only deep conditioners i use and love and will forever stick to because they work. They smell okay. They leave my hair soft and strong. I deep condition my hair every wash day now.

  1. Organics by Africa’s best hair mayonnaise
  2. ORS the original hair mayonnaise

Moisturiser.

These products are rich, creamy and smell great. This is how i use either of them; leave in conditioner on my damp hair, a moisturiser, and a sealant. They make my twists and braids look juicy.

  1. ORS hair repair intense moisture creme.
  2. Shea butter miracle moisture intense silky hair moisturiser.
  3. ORS olive oil creme hair dress; extra rich for dry thirsty hair.

Sealant.

Yes i use these products ha ha. I decided to go back to these products because these were the things my mother used on my hair and scalp when i was a child. Since i went back to it, i have noticed that my hair retains more moisture and breaks less, plus it defines my curls. I love them. I’ll write a more detailed post about them.

  1. Blue magic conditioner hair dress (the original).
  2. Dax pomade.

Styling products.

These products provide great hold and will define your styles and keep them for 2 to 3 days.

  1. Cantu Shea butter for natural hair coconut oil shine and hold mist.
  2. ORS olive oil 12 in 1 style defining creme gel: it has a strong smell but works so well.
  3. Cantu Shea butter for natural extreme hold styling stay glue: its quite sticky but does not flake. It does feel a bit crunchy when dry but defines my curls.

Edge control.

These products provide good hold, but if you’re looking for that 24 hour hold then this isn’t it. I cycle a lot and when it sweat, it lifts some of my hair up but my edges still look nice. I’m really not bothered about not having sleek looking edges anyway. They wont flake unless you use a lot (esp the Eco styler).

  1. Murray’s edge wax extreme hold.
  2. ORS monoi oil anti breakage edge control hair gel.
  3. Eco styler sport.

Accessories & Tools.

  1. Get hair bands/ties that are snag proof and don’t have any metal class on them.
  2. If you are like me and you love simplifying things, then get hair clips. They are great for sectioning your hair.
  3. Soft boar bristle brush: if you’re not too bothered about have super sleek styles/edges, then get one of these. It still gets the job done to me.
  4. We all need a wide tooth comb to detangle our hair with. I always finger detangle first.

And lastly;

For growth & preventing dry scalp.

Virgin hair fertilizer. Does it work? YES it works for me. It has made my edges thicker. It is very tingly on the scalp and before i use it, i slightly spritz my scalp with water. If you decide to get one, get the one with the red cap and not the yellow cap (this is said to be the fake one), it should also have an expiry date.

I hope your journey becomes fun, if it isn’t already.

Have a good one and i will see you next time.

My current hair care favourites

Hello friends, how are you all doing?

I want to share with you all, products that have kicked my old hair products to the curb and these new ones are helping my hair thrive way better. So I intend on sticking to them.

These products cater to kinky hair and that is my hair type so they are just perfect.

  • Shea Moisture Jamaican black castor oil strengthen, grow and restore shampoo: nice strong smell and a little goes a long way. It definitely leaves my hair feeling very clean and strong. I do not follow up with a conditioner because I use a leave in conditioner.

  • Pantene truly natural Co-Wash cleansing conditioner: this has a really strong scent but it does leave my hair feeling moisturised and soft. I won’t recommend it for removing build up on your hair and scalp, but it cleans it lightly without stripping any oils.

20170629_161457

  • Alikay Naturals Lemongrass leave in conditioner: if you are transitioning or are already natural, and you need a leave in, look no further. This product smells so divine and makes my hair feel super soft, moisturised and manageable. It contains silk amino protein, aloe vera & lemongrass oil.

20170629_162036

  • Alikay Naturals Shea yogurt hair moisturiser: it melts into an oil when rubbed in between your palms and it keeps the hair nice and healthy whilst reducing breakage and split ends.
  • Alikay Naturals Avocado cream moisture repairing mask: this product made my hair smell so good and fresh. I love it.
  • ORS 12 – n – 1 style defining cream: I have talked about this product a lot on Snapchat because it definitely defines your hairstyles. It has avocado oil to help with conditioning and ma king it easy to work with your hair as you style it.

20170629_161602

  • Alikay Naturals Essential 17 hair growth oil: this contains the necessary oils to help promote healthy, strong, thick hair. It has emu oil, rosemary, olive, jojoba, sweet almond, tea tree, horsetail powder, peppermint, etc. You can really feel it tingle after using it to massage your scalp.

  • Murray’s EdgeWax extreme hold: this in my opinion works way better that any of the ors or creme of nature edge controls. It does not flake. When I apply it on my edges, I use a soft boar bristle brush to comb it down and I tie down my edges with a scarf. This method helps set the edge control and makes it last.

Well it’s safe to say that Alikay Naturals is my new favourite natural hair care brand and I can’t wait to get more of their products.

Let me know if you’ve tried any of the products listed 😃 or the brand.

Do have a lovely day 💕.

My favourite natural hair products.

Hey beautiful people,

I know the struggle of trying to find products that work for your hair when you go back to your natural hair. This can lead you to become a product junkie (guilty).

So to avoid this, when you buy a product, use it once, twice or even 3 times to find out if your hair likes it or not. Or better still, do some research to find out if it will work for your hair type/porosity.

I have decided to stick to one brand for my hair care routine and that is the ‘ORS brand. This is because these products are designed for Afro hair and they are affordable. Plus the products really do what they say.

For shampoo and conditioner i use the creamy aloe shampoo and replenishing conditioner. These two products are by far the best duo I have tried for my natural hair care. The shampoo lathers instantly and really cleans your scalp and hair. Whilst the conditioner Leaves your hair soft and smelling so good. This shampoo isn’t sulfate free.

For leave in conditioner i use Monoi oil anti-breakage leave in conditioning crème with omega 3 & 6. It helps reduce protein loss which encourages stronger hair. The smell is divine and a little goes a long way as it is thick. To use it, I Spritz my hair with water, take a little bit of the product and rub it on my palms, then distribute it around my hair. It leaves it feeling really soft.

For moisturizing my hair i use 3 products  (not at the same time);

To add shine to my styles i use the Nourishing Sheen spray and the anti-breakage rejuvenating spray. i use these on braids or a twist out or roller set. it can even be used to take down your styles to reduce frizz.

To deep condition or for a protein treatment, i use Hair mayonnaise treatment for damaged hair. Now my hair isn’t damaged, but this definitely prevents it from damage. It contains olive oil, egg protein, herbs and wheatgerm oil.

Finally, to slick my edges down i use monoi oil anti-breakage edge control hair gel with omega 3 & 6. This is the new flexible hold gel and I absolutely love it way more than the original ORS edge control. It doesn’t leave any white residue and you can control the amount of hold by how much you use.

Box braids

Hello everyone 😃.

I’m so excited to be doing this post because it is a style i will forever adore and love 😄.

For this style I used 3 packs of  Xpression braiding hair colour 1 (black).

I then blow-dryed it to get it silky straight. This makes the twists look nicer and shiny. For further details on how I get the X-pression braiding hair silky straight, check out this post Sleek ponytail (protective style)

Once you’ve gotten the hair nice and straight then you can move onto braiding  🤗.

How to braid your hair .

  • I like to part my hair into 4 sections as I can work better and faster. Here my hair has been washed, detangled and stretched out with twists.
  • I moisturised my hair with my ORS monoi oil leaven in conditioner, oil and moisturizer.

wp-1488666879826.jpg

  • Take a small/medium sized section of hair
  • Grab some braiding hair. Not to much. (refer to video below).
  • Working in small sections, start off by braiding the hair. Refer to the video below on how I braid my hair.
  • After you are done with your whole head, boil some water and pour it into a bowl.
  • Be careful with this step as you do not want to get scalded by the hot water. Dip the tips of the hair into the hot water for a couple seconds and this will seal the ends of the hair , preventing it from unraveling.
  • Use a towel to soak up some of the water on the tips and either let it air dry or blow dry it to dry quicker.

Notes;

  1. I cut each pack of hair in half and feathered the ends.
  2. I didn’t use any mirrors until i stared braiding the front of my hair.
  3. I didn’t use any combs to part my hair. I used my fingers/nails (which were filed).
  4. It took me 13 hours to complete it.
  5. After braiding i trimmed off bits of the extension that was sticking out of the braids (i did not trim where my hair was).

I hope you enjoyed this 😃

Stay tuned for how i style my braids.

Mini twists for length retention

Hello friends 😃.  Hope you’re all doing well.

Ok so I’m bored of just having my hair in a twist out and I have decided to do a cute style that I can keep in for a month and that’s mini twists.

I’m starting off with freshly washed hair. Click my Current wash day routine to check out how I wash my hair.

Quick tip: to stimulate hair growth, give yourself a scalp massage every now and then. Also make sure you moisturize your ends to avoid breakage.

The process

  •  To begin, I divided my hair into four sections as I work quicker this way.
  • Then I begin twisting small sections of my hair. When you get to the end of a twist, curl the ends by twirling it around your finger.
  • After twisting some of my hair, I stretch my hair and use a clip to stretch it out.

wp-1487251725168.jpg

  • You might wonder why I haven’t mentioned any products and that’s because I had already put products in my hair after washing. So click Here to check that out.
  • As my hair started drying, I sprayed some water on it to get it damp and continued twisting.
  • And I’m all done.

Bedtime.

To sleep I either use a satin bonnet, a satin scarf or I simply just sleep on my silk pillowcase.

In the morning.

Your hair might look crazy because you’ve been tossing and turning all night like this crazy girl 😂😂, but not to worry, it can be fixed.

  • Simply spray your hair with a little water and pull on it to stretch it out.
  • You can even use a leave in conditioner to make it actually look weighed down but doesn’t feel that way.
  • I on the other hand sprayed some of my ORS monoi oil anti breakage rejuvenating spray on my palms and distributed that all over the twists focusing on the ends to add shine to my hair.

And you’re good to go.

I hope you try this hairstyle and let me know if you will.

Current wash day routine.

Hello beautiful people 👋.

So I have changed a few steps to my former wash day routine and this process seems to work way better. I also started washing my hair once a week. Because when its not in a protective style, i have to detangle it then wash and that takes a while so i’d rather do it once a week.

Detangling.

  • I start by dividing my hair into 4 sections and clipping them away.

  • Working with one section, divide that into little sections as you detangle

Steaming your hair for maximum hydration ft natural hair.

Hello beautiful people 👋🌹

I’m here today with a frequently spoken about topic between I and my friends/readers. Hair steaming.

Steaming the hair uses moist heat to lift the cuticle of your hair strands, allowing your protein treatment, oil, deep conditioner, to penetrate deeply into the shaft & thereby reducing breakage and rejuvenating damaged hair.

I like to steam my hair at least once a month as this helps lock in moisture and prevents breakage.

*I would recommend steaming your hair at least once a month because if you do it once a week, you might just over moisturize your strands and leave them limp and prone to damage.*

Keep reading to see how i get from this hot mess to having juicy moisturized curls.
